Company knowledge.
Verify the AI answer.
Connecting documents to AI can help retrieve information, but a citation alone does not prove an answer is correct. Check sources, freshness, permissions and whether conclusions follow from the documents before using the output.
At a glance
- Separate finding a document from answering correctly.
- Test missing information, contradictions and restricted access.
- Define when the system should decline to answer.
Start with a question someone needs answered.
Choose recurring questions, such as a customer’s support scope or the current procedure for a task. Prepare an expected answer and supporting documents for each. Include questions that the available material cannot answer.
RAG retrieves knowledge passages and provides them to a model as context. Errors can occur during retrieval or interpretation. Evaluate these stages separately; a fluent answer does not reveal whether the correct document was found.
Which version should the answer use?
Illustrative example: an archived offer describes a different support scope from the current contract. The system finds both documents. A correct answer should flag the conflict and use the agreed source hierarchy rather than combine the terms arbitrarily.
Keep document ownership, version and validity information. Check index updates after material changes or deletion. Memory carried between conversations should not turn past assumptions into current facts.
What makes a useful test?
For a fixed question set, record retrieved sources, answers and reviews by someone who knows the process. Check whether each important conclusion has support. Record omitted conditions and unsupported additions separately.
- A question with a clear answer: does the output retain every important condition?
- Missing or conflicting sources: does the system state the limitation instead of guessing?
- A different user role: does the output avoid exposing documents that person cannot access?
How do you use the result in a business workflow?
Agree where an answer for review is sufficient and where the process owner must approve it. If the output feeds another agent, pass sources and limitations with it. The answer text alone can conceal missing information from the next stage.
Before expanding a pilot, compare retrieval and review time with today’s process. Record cases requiring human corrections. This helps assess company knowledge as part of a connected AI environment without promising infallibility.
Sources and next step
These sources describe mechanisms and good practices. They do not confirm your company’s configuration or compliance. The examples in this guide are illustrative.
